Parish Resource Center Offers Workshop On Ministry In A Changing Culture

The Parish Resource Center, 633 Community Way, Lancaster, will offer a workshop titled “From Membership to Participation: Ministry in a Changing Culture” on Thursday, November 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Center. Nationally known author, teacher, and consultant Gilbert Rendle will lead the workshop. The workshop is open to the public and is especially appropriate for pastors and congregational leaders. Because lunch will be included in the fee, registration must be made by November 13. To register and for more information, contact the Center at 299-9932 or infolancaster@parishresourcecenter.org or visit www.parishresourcecenter.org/lancaster.

Rendle says that churches are among many North American organizations discovering that membership may not be the best way to define a relationship with people who want to participate. But the shift to a new relationship requires leaders to let go of old problem-solving ways. Leaders, he feels, need to learn how to see the opportunities of the new culture. Workshop participants will explore the cultural shift from membership to participation and the implications for the local church.

Dr. Gilbert Rendle is senior consultant at Texas Methodist Foundation Institute for Clergy and Congregational Excellence in Austin. He is author of five widely acclaimed books on congregations and ministry and is well known for his engaging teaching style and insightful consulting with congregations. For further information, contact Joanna Smith or Debbie Sickles at 717-299-9932 or infolancaster@parishresourcecenter.org.

Here’s What God is doing at Pequea Presbyterian Church

Last week, a magnificent and mighty 10 foot angel appeared in our prayer garden, carved by Dean Fox, a local man who does beautiful work. The angel is "the angel of the Lord". He is holding a sword and it appears as if his hands have been wounded and are bleeding down onto the sword (this is something that appeared naturally in the wood as he carved) and there seems to be a tear running down his cheek. I asked the woodcarver to inscribe the Alpha and Omega symbol on his breast. People are stopping to see the angel and telling others about him. Some have taken photos and others have just cried when they saw it.

In the garden we have a mailbox for prayer requests and there is a book where people can share scripture, poetry or their thoughts. We dedicated the garden last summer on a Sunday as part of our worship; when we were leaving the garden, there was a clap of thunder and we watched from inside as hailstones covered the garden white. It was so amazing! We are hoping to have the Easter Sunrise service here for the community. Lancaster Newspaper will be doing an article soon.

Last summer we had a week of Arts and Crafts featuring a different artist each day-a potter, a creative journalist, a scrapbooking facilitator, and a puppet team. The week ended with a talent show. The week was intergenerational and we had parents with kinds and grandparents-the youngest attendee was a month old and the oldest in her 80's.

This weekend we are having a women's retreat featuring a prophetic artist, creative journalist and a local author/songwriter/Psalmist.

In the last two weeks, we baptized five and confirmed four as well as took in a total of 8 new members. That is 14 total since March. So exciting!

Attached is the newest Constitutional Musing (CM#15).  This CM can also be found at the following website: http://www.pcusa.org/constitutionalservices/musings/note15.htm. It comes in response to your requests at the recent Polity Conference.  Essentially it is a description/definition of Authoritative Interpretations. Hope this will be helpful. Leadership and Anxiety in the Church: A Family Systems Perspective, December 4, 2008, 9 am to 4 pm, First Presbyterian Church, 3231 W Tilghman St., Allentown, PA 18104, (610) 395-3781. Since the publication of Dr. Edwin Friedman’s Generation to Generation, many pastors and other church leaders have become aware of Bowen family systems theory as a way of understanding congregational dynamics. Family systems theory identifies differentiation of self and anxiety as two key variables impacting human functioning. The seminar on Leadership and Anxiety in the Church looks at the challenge presented by the rising levels of anxiety being experienced in churches today, as well as the role that self-differentiated leadership can play in calming such anxiety. The facilitator for the seminar is the Rev. Richard Blackburn, Lombard Mennonite Peace Center, Executive Director. He has led hundreds of workshops on conflict transformation and mediation skills, and serves as a mediator and consultant for individuals, churches, and other organizations. He participated in Dr. Edwin Friedman’s Post Graduate Clergy Seminar in Family Emotional Process and the Georgetown Family Center’s Post Graduate Program in Family Systems Theory and Its Applications. The Synod Transformation Network will be hosting this event on December 4 at First Presbyterian Church in Allentown, PA. The Cost is $10 per person for lunch. Pay at the door. Deadline for registration is November 24. You do need to register!!!! To register please send your name, address, phone, email and Presbytery to Cinthia Andjuar at candujar@presbyphl.org .  Let the Donegal office know as well so that we might carpool. Everyone is invited to participate in the event. You do not need to be part of a presbytery Conflict Management Team.

A Morning with Dr. Tony Campolo This event is NO COST for General Admission Tickets. Bridge of Hope Board of directors decided to make this a No Cost Event. A freewill offering will be taken. You will need a ticket to attend. For tickets please email tonytickets@bridgeofhopeyork.org. Include name, address, phone, email or call 717-845-5159.
