EXECUTIVE SUMMARY FOR GROWING FAITH - GROWING CHURCHES

JANUARY 18, 2009 10:30 a.m. worship service at Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church.  The Mission Committee will lead the morning worship service featuring the Tamshiyacu Mission Trip.  Virgil Roark will describe how the 2008 group helped lay the foundation of the new church in Tamshiyacu, Peru.  Middle Octorara is paying for the construction working through Medical Missions, Inc. a Presbyterian organization.  Virgil will lecture, show a DVD from the 2008 experience and he and others who went will answer questions.  Barry Girvin will present information on "sister church partnerships" through the Amazon Mission Fellowship organization. Many people from the local community have expressed an interest in learning what this particular mission trip meant to those who went and to the overall mission of the Middle Octorara Congregation.  Please join us for a look at hands-on evangelism.  Members of the Mission Committee are Barry Girvin, Virgil Roark, Dan Henry, Shirley Graver, Sam Reinhart, Calvin Keene and Betty Kindler.  Check out Middle Octorara's new web site: http://www.middleoctorara.org

At the Trinity Triennial visit by the Committee on Ministry, someone wished that fuel oil could be cheaper. About a month ago we priced it for our house at $2.87 from our long time dealer. That was very high so we shopped around and got it for $2.32 without a contract. We determined that there is a cooperative in Phila area and members of the coop were much less. Sometimes however they want a service contract too.  We checked the following dealers with the following results: Action -  $2.18/gal,   Chester County Fuel Oil - $2.26/gal,  Hanly - $2.37/gal,  Nardello - $2.32/gal,  Rineer - $2.37/gal. (Submitted by Paul Reitman - pauldreitman@gmail.com )  Who would be interested in organizing a co-operative among churches for purchasing fuel oil?  Email Paul if you are interested in this idea.

MISSION INFO

With Israeli and Hamas forces plunging deeper into violent conflict and the death toll in Gaza steadily mounting, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance [www.pcusa.org/pda] has launched an appeal to help provide humanitarian relief supplies to the stricken area. PDA is supporting relief efforts as a member of the Geneva-based Action by Churches Together (ACT) International alliance http://pcusa.org/pda/response/middleeast/act-activities010909.htm

Saturday, 10 January 2009. Al Ahli Arab Hospital continues to receive and care for many patients each day who are injured, wounded, or burned from the current conflict. Up to 40 new patients are seen each day and many of them require hospital admission and surgery. This increased surgical load places strains on related hospital departments – anesthetics, suture material, operating room linens and equipment, bandages, and surgeons themselves. Until relief is available from additional healthcare personnel, the hospital staff works long intervals without rest and struggles against exhaustion. Some hospital staff are now staying in the hospital around the clock, adding to the hospital’s obligations.

In addition, Al Ahli is now receiving patients referred from Shifa Hospital in Gaza City – up to 15 per day. Patients are also being seen, especially children, who are experiencing the effects of fear and psychological trauma.  Thank-you for supporting our presbytery mission project!!

CHRISTIAN FORMATION INFORMATION

1-15-09 Are you still looking for a Lenten Adult Study? Here at Lancaster Theological Seminary, we would like to invite you to join our Adult Study series on "The Book of James: How Should Christians Live? Challenging questions, Simple answers!" led by LTS Professor Chuck Melchert. So far over twenty congregations will be participating in this program.

Here's Chuck Melchert's description of the five week series: The Book of James, often quite neglected, has become a source of excitement due to new modes of interpretation which suggest this book is especially relevant for many of today's churches. James wrote in the first century to new Christian communities who were experiencing difficulties - both difficulties within, having to do with how members related with one another, and also pressures from the conflicting values of their surrounding cultures. James offers wise insight and practical suggestions which are remarkably close to the spirit of Jesus' teachings, and which offer both advice and challenge to today's Christian communities.

Our adult study series includes the following; introductory and concluding lectures at LTS for those who wish to attend (Saturdays, January 7 and April 18); fifteen study guides, plus template for further copying; video or DVD.

The cost for this program is $150 for each participating congregation, with some partial tuition assistance available. For more information, please contact 290-8758 or aanderson@lancasterseminary.edu.

Blessings, Bruce Epperly, Director of Continuing Education and Professor of Practical Theology.
