MISSIONAL CHURCH CORNER

According to "Shaped by God's Heart, the passion and practices of missional churches," the eighth characteristic is "Measure Growth by Capacity to Release, not Retain."  Missional churches do not seek to get bigger, but seek to equip more people to live as authentic disciples of Christ.  This is more a measure of function, not size.  Our measure of success is much more about service than size.  In the Early Church, the local church was the agent of God's sending.  As we developed the modern missionary movement, we stepped back from our own responsibility in this and gave it to "the professionally trained."  The author makes a case for revamping our system of training leadership so that we are able to multiply our leaders and disciples.  We should look for ways, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to release our energy, love, and vibrancy into the world that has so many needs!

ONE GOOD IDEA

I've learned a very good question to ask you while working with Rev. Lyn Reith, the new pastor at St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Lititz.  I was telling Lyn about a dilemma with which I was wrestling and her thoughtful, caring response was simply, "Charlie, who is helping you to solve that problem?"  She said this in such a tone that it went straight to my heart.  I knew that she genuinely cared.  I hope to ask this question in many other contexts and in many ways.  Who is helping you solve your problems?  Are you aware of your vast resources?  How much of the problem solving burden are you carrying by yourself?  We are all in this journey together.  Let us share the load and enjoy the trip!  Lyn, thank you for caring enough to ask me the question!

If you have a good idea, I'd love to share it in this eNews letter.  Send it to me via: cgross@donegalpby.com  Thank-You Very Much!
