Draft Budget for 2006!

Presbytery leaders of all levels gathered on Monday Aug 8th to work on our 2006 budget. It's a great process!  We are trying hard to add value to our common work and ministry.  We also hope to present narratives around the mission and work that we share.

TOP STORIES

Our 2006 budget!  We have developed a great budgeting process, but we are wrestling with tough issues.  We realized that our vision for ministry was stretched by our Capital Fund Campaign - "Moving Christ's Mission Forward!"  This campaign tried to add New Church Development money, Church Vitalization money, Camp Donegal money, and extra mission money which was over and above our regular budget.  We now have a bigger heart for mission and ministry in these areas that cost us financial resources NOT in our ordinary budget.  Furthermore, we believe that we are being called to Grow Faith and Grow Churches and to reach more effectively into our communities with Christ's love.  We have been constantly asking for your ideas and inputs in how to manage this dilemma.  We have heard your plea to keep GA mission giving at our current rate, so we will be recommending the 45% split for GA again this year. (This will keep us as the number one mission giving Presbytery).  However, we are faced with about a $460,000 need for Presbytery mission - includes New Church Development, Vitalization, Camp Donegal, and PALM Grants.  This will require a 43% split of our mission money, and allow a 12% split for the Synod.  Our Per Capita for this year is $20.52.  Due to some minor increases, we will probably be recommending a $22.00 per capita for 2006.  These issues will be discussed at the Administration Department meeting on Sept 6th and the Council meeting on Sept 12th.  Send your helpful comments and insights to Charlie Gross, cgross@donegalpby.com.  Thank-you for your large, servant, mission-giving heart!

MISSION INFORMATION

Purpose Driven New London in Mission.  Jeff Lampl, his 14 year old Sam, and 7 other adults from NLPC have been in Kenya, for two or three weeks.  They return on August 13.  They have been partnering with New Hope Church adjacent to the Nairobi slums for the purpose of expanding on the PEACE Plan (see Matthew 10 and Luke 10) which is part of the Purpose Driven Movement. Jeff writes:

P = plant churches.  I will be helping New Hope and many other pastors develop small groups within their churches who will multiply into unchurched, underprivileged areas starting new groups (churches), who will meet regularly for worship and reach out to the respective communities.

E = equip servant leaders.  I will be teaching pastors from 4 to 8 pm daily equipping them in growing healthy outreach oriented churches according to the Purpose Driven Church mode.  I and others will also hold 5 days of volleyball and basketball clinics and tournaments.  (We've funded and physically helped build a permanent outdoor volleyball court and also a basketball court)  to lead young people to Christ, and identify young adults who will reproduce these clinics when we're gone

A = assist the poor.  Our team is presenting a four day seminar to leaders on how to start and sustain micro enterprise among the poor.  One of our members is teaching some of the poor how to obtain wood, make benches for profit, take the profit and grow a business and then teach others how to do the same.  Last year we got some families in the "coal business"

C= care for the sick.  Our intent is to teach preventable medicine, in particular, AIDS prevention.  This will go full force next year, but we're hoping to get a start now, The goal is to raise up leaders to do it in multiple sites when we leave.

E= educate the next generation.   We're teaching Bible school for 6 days, two sessions each, like a community outreach VBS.  And, again, we hope to leave behind those who do second Timothy 2:2.  Next year this will develop into literacy training.

Susan Barnes, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Baker City, Oregon will be constructing a quilted banner made of 2” X 2” fabric squares to take to the General Assembly in the summer of 2006.  She is asking each PC(USA) church to send her two fabric squares- representing their first woman elder and first woman deacon.  She is also asking each clergywoman to send a fabric square.  The fabric squares should be sent before December 31, 2005 to Rev. If you are interested in helping out with the breakfast (setting up, cooking, or cleaning up) please contact: Ed Deady: egdeady@aol.com or 610-469-2507 and leave a message. Hope to see you there.....

The Methodists have a wonderful resource here: <http://www.gbod.org>  I particularly like the Worship pages. A hymn by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette was added this week. Most, if not all, downloadables on the site have copyright permission included. This was from an email from Elaine Pennell at Nottingham Pres.

Translation Services.  Rev. Marion Haynes-Weller asked about bulletin or sermon translation services from English to Spanish.  Rev. Denny Walker suggested trying the following website.     <http://world.altavista.com>

www.40Lives.com is the new congregational website for "People of Purpose." The book (and website) examine the popular "40 Days of Purpose" model of Rick Warren's Purpose-Driven Life from a mainline church perspective! It can be used by individuals as a 40-day devotional or by church groups wanting to study the themes for 40 weeks. The author is a graduate of McCormick seminary (even served on the executive board).

Board of Pensions holds the line on Medical Plan dues for 2006.  No increase!! Yea!

Internal Revenue Service Issue for clergy.  Head of staff at Pequea Presbyterian Church, Rev. Steve Getty, pointed out a potential problem with your IRS credits toward retirement.  The IRS was adding his W2 wages to his Self-Employed wages - which were both the same figure and effectively giving him double credit for about 10 years.  This gives a false impression of retirement wages.  You might want to check with the IRS to insure this is not happening to you.

ONE GOOD IDEA

I.C.E. In Case of EmergencyParamedics will turn to a victim's cell phone for clues to that person's identity. You can make their job much easier with a simple idea that they are trying to get everyone to adopt: ICE. ICE stands for In Case of Emergency. If you add an entry in the contacts list in your cell phone under ICE, with the name and phone no. of the person that the emergency services should call on your behalf, you can save them a lot of time and have your loved ones contacted quickly. It only takes a few moments of your time to do. Paramedics know what ICE means and they look for it immediately. ICE your cell phone NOW!

I checked this out with our local Emergency Services folks and they agree with the idea.  Normally hospital emergency room personnel are the ones trying to notify others, but this could assist them in that task.  Head Chaplain, Keith Bitner, at Lancaster General Hospital loves the idea!  I hope you don't need their services!!

If you have a good idea, I'd love to share it in this eNews letter.  Send it to me via: cgross@donegalpby.com  Thank-You Very Much!
