The Presbytery 2008 Budget draft.  A dedicated group has been working on our 2008 budget.  Our efforts have been filtered through the lens of Growing Faith and Growing Churches with the priority areas of Building Healthy, Vibrant Congregations, Leadership Development, Evangelism and New Church Development, and Outreach to the World.  At this point our Per Capita budget for 2007 was $365,600 and is proposed for 2008 at $385,600 for a total per capita rate of: $25.35.  This increase is due to the General Assembly this coming year, the shift of the Associate Execs pay from Mission to Per Capita and a proposed 4% pay increase.  The Mission budget for 2007 is $361,000 and we are proposing $371,000.  The increase is primarily in our Vitalization efforts as well as support for Camp Donegal.

Hi, Friends! A book for your reading list: Alligators in the Swamp: Power, ministry, and leadership edited by George B. Thompson, Jr.  How often have well intentioned congregations called well intentioned pastors who then end up leaving too soon because "it didn't work out"?  In my presbytery we had over a dozen such partings in one year. Alligators in the Swamp talks about why this happens so often and what can we do to stop it.  When I was pastor of College Park Presbyterian Church, our four-church cluster group invited George and his wife Beverly Thompson to lead us in a church growth event.  As they talked about church "culture" and how it both supports and sabotages our life together, I saw light bulbs going off above the heads of lay people all around the room.  This would be a great book for pastors to read with their sessions, or for Committees on Ministry to discuss together.  Alligators in the Swamp, Pilgrim Press, 2005.   Grace and peace, Joan Gray

Feeling the need to get away and be supported?  Consider the National Pastoral Care Network Conference Oct 8 - 11 at Louisville Theological Seminary.  The theme is, "From Surviving to Thriving: Four Key Practices for Clergy Wellness"  For info Julie Johnson 806.438.0886 or http://www.pastoralcarenetwork.org

275th Anniversary Celebration of the Presbytery of Donegal Oct 14, 2007 at Hempfield Performing Arts Center!   Alert your choir director/choir about the combined choir, Oct. 14   Consider opening your church for “visitation Sundays” with some type of historical display or presentation. ONE GOOD IDEA

I recently have become a convert to Adobe Acrobat.  I have complete versions of the Book of Order, the Book of Confessions, and even Calvin's Institutes (among other things) now stored in my computer.  Using Acrobat - instead of just Reader - means that I can cut and paste from these documents.  But here's the neat part.  In Acrobat, these documents are completely searchable.  You can do a word or phrase search.  For example, today I was curious about the way the creeds handled the sacrament of baptism.  I found that the Book had eighty some odd references and was pretty quickly able to trace with historical consistency the real basis of infant baptism within the Reformed tradition.  When I was writing my thesis, the ability to search Calvin was an incredible blessing.   As I said, maybe I'm the last person to have found this out, but it's pretty neat!  Jim Crawford

Extravagant Blessings!     Charlie

If you have a good idea, I'd love to share it in this eNews letter.  Send it to me via: cwgross@gmail.com   Thank-You Very Much!
